For this assignment I showed students portraits done by Taylor McKimens, Kyle Ranson, and Vincent van Gogh. They started their pieces by doing a watercolor wash underpainting. They then blocked in with acrylic the areas of hair and face with light color. The final step is to draw in the face with black and colored sharpies using tapered lines. I would have had them use brushes, but I think we ran out of small good brushes that can make that type of line work. This might be a little much for a class that is mostly 9th and 10th graders.
